artists statement

Andrea Curtis explores colour, pattern and still life through a combination of print, collage and drawing.  At first glance, her work appears deceptively simple but look deeper and you see her unique language of marks and colour combinations are given depth and texture by layering of tissue and painted papers.

Still life and flowers have always been favourite subjects. She is fascinated by the stories that can be told simply by a collection of objects. This series of work is a slight departure from previous work as she introduces printed techniques such as linocut and monoprint combined with painting and drawing to create more abstract, contemporary pieces.

Andrea graduated from West Surrey college of art and design in 1987 with a BA in textile design Followed by an MA in printmaking from Newport Art College.

Andrea regularly exhibits her work in her home country of Wales and the rest of the UK, and has been commissioned by designers for both domestic and commercial spaces.

In recent years, Covid allowing, Andrea has opened her home as a gallery and has her next open home studio in October of this year.

She has also sold her work to raise money for charitable causes - most notable was the £3000 raised for the red cross appeal in early 2022.

“The process of creating the work for me is as important as the end result. There is an element of it being personally cathartic, the rhythm of mark making, cutting and placing shapes allows an internal sense making of the mind and I find myself compelled to keep producing work.

My still life is really a reflection of the shapes and forms and objects that I love and like to see in my home in the little vignettes I create three dimensionally. They often tell stories of our family and our travels. The pots which frequently feature are a vehicle to carry pattern and line and although there is a simplicity to the work I find I’m able to reflect some of the subtleties and nuances of my experience in the layering and textures I use.

Ultimately my pieces I hope, bring colour, a sense of lightness and a different energy and vibrancy to a space making it an all more pleasant and joyful place to spend time in”
